[Objective] To explore a new way to cultivate English majors in traditional Chinese medical universities, based on the case of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. [Methods] After a critical analysis of the English major curricula in Chinese medical colleges and universities, a new curriculum was put forward combining the three modules of English language and literature, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and international communication. The new curriculum was evaluated and reflected through language tests and questionnaires. [Results] The results of language tests showed that the correlation coefficient between students‘ receptive vocabulary and productive vocabulary was 0.531, and students‘ English vocabulary of TCM increased significantly. The survey on cross-cultural communicative ability indicated students‘ strong tendency to spread TCM, with 45.0% of them believing their ability to propagate Chinese medicine has reached the expected requirements, and 78.3% of them saying they were familiar with common cross-cultural communicative strategies, such as body language, paraphrase, similar expressions, literal translation, etc. The results on students‘ needs showed that 25.6% of the students considered themselves incompetent in reading, writing and translating TCM, and 63.3% and 57.2% of the students were not satisfied with the teaching methods and effects of the new curriculum. [Conclusion] The new curriculum plays a positive role in carrying forward the traditional culture and propagate TCM, helping Chinese youngsters with their self-identification. It is also effective in improving English majors‘ communicative ability of TCM and equipping them with corresponding strategies, but the teaching process should be extended accordingly, and the teaching methods should also be shifted from “theory-centered” to “practice-centered”.
